Oh noes!
The server is wonking out right now and you can not hit any mobs when you break blocks it replaces them for a minute and doesn't drop the item... i think it needs a restart

I think it's probably just lag. Try relogging.

This can also be a internet problem, I have got the same problem a couple times, I just tryed to do something with the internet cable or wireless and it worked. I dont really remember what I did though... :P
