Currently the server is down due to a giant lightning storm taking out power for the area kommy is at.

The last one was due to a huge storm by Kommy's house which knocked out the power, this one was due to something funky with the restart. It's unusual that the restart server downs have been happening more often though.

IM starting to think either the server hard drive starting to fail since its SSD or the freaken map is becoming too big for the server to handle

I blame ez86. Slightly before he "left" he announced his intention to generate as many new chunks as possible.

Im curious... are we the only one server with a map this size out there?

Well how big is MCJ's map? Others may be smaller but significantly denser - the 100 block rule distance here along with the massive oceans and multiple starting points (the world portals) have encouraged and required people to spread out in every direction.
The server billing itself as "the oldest" runs a 30km circle on 8x Xeon CPUs, 32Gb ram, exclusive use of a 10GBit connection and operates in a data center. Those stats seem to be pretty standard for the "big" servers but not many of them run dynmap or publicly boast about their map size.

IM not sure how to measure it as far as km, would be nice to find out how I can do that. It is running on quad core with 16 gigs of Ram and I think one of the problems is that SSD drive starting to fail which Im surprised it lasted this long especially since its the same drive that lived through the old fashion way of minecraft saving.
Also part of me wants to start new map without public building stargates or warps to prevent the world growing too fast. Truthfully... I don't think minecraft was to build a server thats running a 20 gig freaken map with people at every end of it building stuff and warping around. At certain point we have to either stop such a big wide spread by either no warping or stargating or we just have to come to realize if we want to be able to fly and warp all over the freaken world and worlds that we would have to start new world every year, lol.
